Alas, poor Novaks; I knew them, Balthazar

I'm finally getting started on my Novakfest and I have issues. :(

Like, what religion is Jimmy?  Clearly the Novaks are Protestant of some sort, but I've no idea what denomination.  I say Protestant instead of Christian because they're definitely not Catholic.  And then I think not Lutheran, either, but I'm not sure.  Lutheran could work, or any number of other Protestant faiths, which unfortunately I'm not familiar with at all.

And then also, how old is Claire when Jimmy says yes to Castiel?  My instinctual response is 12/13, but I can't tell!  It could be a bit younger, I suppose, and then I figure she could be as old as 14 or 15, as well.  I can't find anything about the actress's age, which would give me a better guess, so.  I'm stuck.

My suspicion is that the Novaks are from one of the evangelical Christian denominations that think everything not Christian, by their definition of Christian, is Of The Devil. The target market for Christian romance and Christian rock, in other words. My evidence: demons and angels as a rule have very little trouble with pop-culture references, only exceptions to mind being Zachariah's WTF at the Suite Life of Zach and Cody reference and Castiel's WTF at...everything, really. Zachariah's vessel's not exactly the target audience for Suite Life, so if Zachariah's vessel hasn't got a kid who watches Disney Channel, odds are Zachariah's vessel wouldn't know jack about Suite Life, while still knowing all the references Zachariah has made or gotten. And we know Lucifer had no trouble with hearing what Sam was thinking. So if Zachariah only understands decoupage and Gilligan's Island and 'Elvis has left the building' because his vessel does, and Castiel doesn't understand anything about pop culture, it follows that Castiel's confusion derives from Jimmy's. Which means Jimmy's life has been fairly isolated from pop culture, and since we know he's some flavor of Christian and we know there are Christian groups that stay as far from pop culture as possible...

Oooooh, those are very very good points. I love your theory about angels knowing pop culture to the extent their vessels do. They could rectify it, of course, by watching tv/reading/listening to news, but angels as a whole I doubt would be a fan of sitting around researching human contemporary life; demons might be more inclined to watch some late night tv.

My one thing to add would be that Jimmy sells ad time for the radio...so I'd be surprised to find him *that* far removed from pop culture.

But, I'm thinking definitely evangelical of some sort; just maybe not to quite that extent.

This is very true. It could easily be The Evangelizing Hour with Pastor Bob, or something :DD

From discussion over on the LJ side of my journal, I'm leaning towards them being Baptist, right now - it can be pretty evangelical or quite not, and a lot of what I'm reading about it seems to fit the Novaks.
