because why write your essay when there is fandom?

from [livejournal.com profile] mfirefly10, Reply with "Batman’s crying!" and I'll give you four fandoms. Write about your favorite character from each fandom.

and I got: Merlin, Dr. Who, Nikita, and Supernatural.

Merlin: Gwen! Once upon a time this would have been a difficult toss-up between her and Morgana, but these days Gwen is just the absolute best part of Merlin. Even if it's not constant or consistent, her development has been wonderful, and Angel Coulby is perfection. I just really really love this alternative vision of Guinevere as someone who is not bred to Queenship but will be perfect at it anyway. In a show like Merlin which does (at least some of the time, when its not killing off random knights with no discussion) take a very modern approach to a medieval-fantasy set show, having our Queen (and I always type Gween at first)-to-be as a commoner fills a certain voice/perspective need of the show, yes, but it is also just the best possible setting for Gwen's character to shine, I think, and that has certainly been the case since the first episode. I will never be unable to adore a character who is the center of drama and angst and yet is so sunshiney and optimistic and good.

Doctor Who: This is really tough, actually, because there has never been a main character on DW that I haven't loved, and I tend to fluctuate depending on season. If I'm watching S1-2, Rose and Nine and Ten are my faves; watching S3 Martha is undeniably the BEST EVER; in S4 Donna takes all of the prizes; and in S5-6 Eleven, Amy, Rory, and River make me have all the happiness in the world. Sooooooooo. I'll say the TARDIS is my favorite :D Cop-out, yeah, but she's always been an animate love of mine, and that only increased when we got Idris in The Doctor's Wife.

Nikita: I haven't watched any of S2 yet, though it's all recorded on my tv waiting, so this is based solely on S1, and in that case, my favorite is Jaden. Nikita and Alex are both flawless, and I adore me some Michael, Amanda scares the crap out of me in a good way, Birkhoff is presh, etc. But JADEN. Girl is screwed up like everyone else on the show, and yet has a harder time fitting in to the Division world of screw-ups. She's tough, and puts on an even tougher front to prove herself, and is convinced wholeheartedly that she needs the Division family to redeem herself from...whatever it was in her past that we never knew about. But she is not as cold as Percy, Amanda, etc, nor does she have the motivation or drive of Nikita and Alex. She has no one telling her it will be okay, no one to love her, and so she does the best she can to make Division proud and to make herself the best she can be and to survive. I miss her :(

Supernatural: lolz you think I'm going to say Castiel, don't you? And yeah, I could write odes to Misha's face/voice/perfection and to Cas' arc and to his relationships with Sam and Dean, with his family, etc. I could bring in the Novaks. I could try to think of coherent things to say and instead probably get lost on tumblr staring at pictures of his face.
But. Cas is the reason I watch (well- watched, as in, got into watching) Supernatural. Cas is the catalyst for a flurry of feelings that I never quite had when going through the early seasons, and for some actually really difficult introspection. Cas is the subject of so many hours of skyping garbled joy at [livejournal.com profile] l_a_r_m and flailing in agonized love. Castiel is perfection and my love and everything wonderful.

But my favorite Supernatural character is Ruby. I don't know how to explain it. It has a lot to do I think with the coincidence of her and Anna in the Heaven and Hell/I Know What You Did Last Summer two-episode arc of demon and angel sex and grace-trees and all that, because I adore Anna and I never got over the idea of Sam'n'Dean'n'Ruby'n'Anna('n'Cas) all there together. It has a lot to do with the inexplicable fact that despite all canonical evidence that she never really loved Sam, I still ship Ruby/Sam like burning. It has a lot to do with the fact that in both incarnations she was kickass, snarky, loved french fries, sort of saved a comatose girl once, so smart and driven, so AWESOME. I just love her, and I will never accept that she is gone, and I want her to come back.  Supernatural's vision of a world in which morality is problematic and often doesn't apply/exist, in which all characters have their dark places, constantly makes me fall hard for the 'bad guys,' and the fact that Ruby is both a heroine and a villainess just doubles my love for her, apparently. Take any one of the fandoms you know I write/rec/read AND give me a type of AU (space opera AU, pirate AU, superhero AU, etc) OR another time period (Ancient Rome, Regency England, etc). I will then explain the gist of the story I would write for that AU.

Title: Just Fine
Cast: Gugu Mbatha-raw, Anna Popplewell, James McAvoy, Laila Rouass
Song: U2 - Numb
Lie, die, serve
Don't theorize, realise, polarise
(I feel numb)
Chance, dance, dismiss, apologise

Summary: Dana (Mbatha-raw) has played in halls of power for years, brushing elbows with presidents and executives, paying off a family debt by advising and protecting a corrupt oil mogul.  But it is not the great people she remembers, not the ambassadors she's bribed or the hitmen she's killed. Dana's memory surrounds her experiences with three ordinary people - Katie (Popplewell), a childhood friend; Andrew (McAvoy), the coffee intern; and Sophia (Rouass), the roommate who knows nothing of Dana's job.  When everything goes wrong and Dana becomes the mark, it is in these three she finds unexpected help, and these three she must now protect.

I really want to read some of Camus' literature this summer.  The Myth of Sisyphus was already gorgeous enough, and that was you know, philosophy, which I tend to have trouble understanding/being interested in reading unless it's pretty like Kierkegaard or Camus.

Anyway.  I'm trying to write a paper about the question of philosophical suicide, which sucks, because the topic is interesting but if I'd chosen the Invisible Man prompt I could be done already, but whatever.

Anyway. Camus is pretty cool.  This dude Gilbert Hardy says "Asked about his favorite words, Camus gave once the following list: world, pain, earth, mother, people, desert, honor, misery, summer, and sea."

And I really like that, the fact that he could give such a list.  The ensuing examination of what it all meaaaaaans is a little loltastic and foreshadows Hardy's ultimate argument that Jesus is laughing at Camus because it's Camus' atheism which doesn't allow him to really find a solution to the absurd, but the list itself is supes cool.

So I think it's meme-time! List your ten favorite words (or just ten of your favorite words), whether they're favorites because of meaning, sound, fanciness, memory, or no reason at all.
1. giggle
2. ephemeral
3. silence
4. landscape
5. cosmos
6. anathema
7. origin
8. book
9. naufragio ('shipwreck' in Spanish...but not 'shipwreck.' It's not the same)
10. alas

This one!  Taken from [personal profile] be_themoon

Give me a fandom (or preferably a character or a pairing, or a group of characters if you want to be specific, especially if it's a large cast, it actually might be easier if you do it this way) and I’ll make a genderswap graphic with people from the opposite sex that I think could play those parts.

(Note: I don't promise *good* graphics, but it looks fun, so.)

This one!

Ask me a fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general. Questions can be as wacky as you want. Ask me about tv shows, characters, fanfic in general, fandom issues/meta, anything about any of my stories specifically. BRING IT ON.

Seriously, ask, please.  I'm in a fic rut right now like whoa, and I really just want to talk about fandom.

I'm also doing that accent meme, but I was halfway through it when one my roommates walked in, so.  I'll get to that soon.

Meme from Lass! Name a character from one of my fandoms and I'll give you:
a) a fact about them from my personal canon
b) a reason he/she sucks
c) a reason he/she is amazing
d) a thing that I'd like to see happen to them
e) someone that I can't ship that character with

Also, omg you guys, last night Wyrm pointed out to me the glorious glory that is Microsoft OneNote, and I am in LOVE.  It's a lot like Scrivener (which I never could get the beta for to work), but like, I have it!  And it's so PRETTY and organizationally sound, and there so much awesome stuff to do with it :DDDD

From [personal profile] animus_wyrmis : To the first five people who comment to this post, I will gift you with something of my own crafting. It may be an icon, a manip, a drawing, a ficlet, or something completely random (actually it will probably be either a ficlet or something random). You may love it or you may think it sucks, but regardless, it will be made with love for you from me. ;) Feel free to give me a hint of what you might like (ship, character, actor/actress, fandom, color, etc).

Also, lol, apparently this is a Wyrm post - we read Shakespearean sonnets today and then also a Donne, Holy Sonnet #14, and guys, is this not basically Lucy of the sea is her downfall?

Batter my heart, three-person'd God; for you
As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise, and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town, to another due,
Labour to admit you, but O, to no end.
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captived, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy ;
Divorce me, untie, or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.
