NARNIAAAAAAA. Okay, it is probably a really good thing that I slept in between seeing the movie and writing this, and also a good thing that Irish and Hev and Kate were online when I got in and I could hyperventilate to them, because otherwise this would be incomprehensible. Possibly it still will be, at points.

BECAUSE I REALLY REALLY LIKED IT, GUYS. Not even going to go there with the gorgeousness of it, because I think that's a given, and I could probably spend hours describing how my breath caught when painting moved and they swam up through the water and we see the Dawn Treader and when the light comes to light away the dark clouds of Dumbledore's death the Dark Island, and the fruit at Aslan's table and the shots of Lucy enjoying her cruise! a;lejapowej ALL SO GORGEOUS.

Music - LaRM was right, it was a bit disappointing.  I didn't notice until the end, when they're arriving at the Waterfall and playing the good ol' Aslan theme music, and it's so gorgeous and powerful and then I was like, oh. Huh. Why haven't I been getting auditory goosebumps throughout the whole movie?  It was GOOD music, and I especially liked some of the stuff when they were just sailing, but it didn't have that huge impact.

Costuming - A++++++  I spent the entire movie thinking how pretty everyone looked, which I mean, is half just that they are all so very pretty, but the clothes!  ALSO LUCY WORE AN OVERLARGE SHIRT TO SLEEP IN, CLEARLY IT WAS CASPIAN'S <3333333333333
Also I really liked Liliandil's dress, how underneath all the fuzzy glowworm light it looked so frothy and sparkly yet simple.  Very very pretty.

Plot - Eh. I'm not *disappointed* and it didn't ruin the movie at all, but let's just say that if they suddenly said OH and we have a book compliant version, too! I would be very happy. Biggest plot issues: the swords.  WHY DO SEVEN TELMARINE LORDS HAVE ANCIENT NARNIAN SWORDS GIVEN TO THE LAND BY ASLAN TO PROTECT IT? (an idea I quite like, actually; that has lots of fic promise as to traditional Narnian hierarchies and politics and whatnot, especially because if you can't wield a sword (a man-sized sword, moreover), then you can't be a blessed magical-sword guardian of the land)  They seemed to really play up Caspian IX as a very Narnian sort of king, you know? Like Miraz was the only one oppressing the Narnians.  And that just seems like such a huge oversight to me, that it was bothersome.  So I'll need to work on finding some explanation for that.  I suppose the swords could have been taken in the conquest and given to Telmarine lords as a symbol of their utter power over not only the Narnian land but also the Narnian mythology/faith?  The swords' meaning bastardized from protection to become a symbol of simply rulership?  Anyway, moving on.

I was also disappointed by how heavily the Dark Island/Mist was played up.  I understand completely that they were trying to find some overarching villain that could tie the journey together and create a climactic battle sequence, and the way they did it works for that.

It's just...the climactic moment of the book may be quieter and more splintered, but that doesn't make it less powerful or effective.  So again, I can totally deal with this, and even enjoy it, but I would be super happy if someone would take these same actors and go make a book-compliant version.

Now, taking the Dark Island plot as granted, and as it's own thing, I'm still a tad disappointed by its use.  The fact that it was EVERYWHERE had some pretty harsh ramifications not only on plot but on character, I think.  The plot part is obvious - uhhh, WHY are they sending rowboats of people into it? Has it demanded sacrifices? I am so confused.   The character part is more personal preference, I think.  I'm sure many people were completely pleased with having an external and clear symbolization of/motivation for evil and temptation, but it made the character journeys super heavy handed.  My favorite use of the mist was that one night when they're all having bad dreams.  While I didn't care for the extreme focus on Lucy's vanity-issues/desire to be pretty as her one character arc, I liked that sequence a lot, primarily because it really showed that it wasn't just that she wanted to be pretty, but that she was struggling much more three-dimensionally with envy for the way her sister easily fits in and is admired; there, she's very much the younger sister trying to determine her own unique place and value in the world, and I thought it was effective.  And of course I just loved the dream sequence in England. Or, America? I wasn't quite sure where they were, but that's okay.  And I liked that Lucy saying the spell was just a dream, after all.  And then, to bring it back to the mist plot, I liked the subtlety of the bit in the boys' cabin.  Subtlety is good, movie makers.  Caspian simply tossing and turning and saying 'Father' tells me a lot more than Caspian monologuing about how he worries he's not as good a king as his father.   And Jadis appearing to Edmund in that dream was good, too. ALSO THEN LUCY COMES IN AND CASPIAN WAKES UP AND LOOK HOW HE LOOKS AT HER. HE WASN'T JUST DREAMING ABOUT HIS FATHER, GUYS. PRIOR TO THAT HE WAS TOTALLY DREAMING ABOUT LUCY, AND THAT LOOK WAS A 'OH HEYYY, AM I STILL DREAMING? IF YOU CAN'T SLEEP, LUCY, YOU COULD TOTALLY COME SHARE MY HAMMOCK' <33333333

Anyway, the mist.  I was not very pleased by the way the serpent became an AGENT OF THE EVIL MIST OF TEMPTATION AND EVIL IMAGINATION. IDK, that felt heavy-handed.  The battle was AWESOME, though, with the return of ninja!Ed who swings through the rigging, and LUCY LUCY LUCY, SHE SHOOTS THE SERPENT USING SUSAN'S BOWWWWW.  Also Caspian was awesome bad ass kingly king there, and I really liked that.

Still trying to come up with an explanation for how all the sacrifices came back perfectly well at the end. I mean, family movie, okay, whatever.  In my head, they AREN'T okay; they're physically fine but I mean, being stuck in the Dark Island where your dreams come true...there are serious issues following them back, I think.

Characters now, I think, to try to give this some sort of organization.

Eustace.  Starting with him because he's the easiest.  Will Poulter is a god.  I was so impressed the entire way through, from the annoyingness to bravery to Narnianness.  I mean, just perfect. ajepaijpajpj kejapeijfhkejapo j I can't actually articulate it, honestly, but I doubt I need to because I doubt anyone watching could be anything less than completely in awe of him.  And the dragon was GORGEOUS.  I think I was alright with them switching the timing of Eustace changing back to a boy, because it just worked, the way they did it.   It fit with their much faster rush through the movie, the switch from a pleasure cruise with side adventures to a desperate quest.  The one thing I would have changed would be the way he was un-Dragoned, because it was honestly more than a bit lame how Aslan didn't even actually touch him. Or, like, talk to him.  But that's alright.  And I liked that, in their new plot with the focus on needing to vanquish this one unified very physical evil, Eustace was the one to get up and run that last sword to the table.

Reepicheep.  Made me cry, multiple times.  I completely saw what rth was talking about, how he's really mentoring Eustace from the start, no matter how annoying Eustace is, and I LOVED it.  PERFECT MOUSE IS PERFECT, OKAY? Screw everything, I have a major literary crush on Reepicheep.  And, idk, I was a little annoyed at how his plot got sidelined, how they were all just 'well, we're here, so we might as well continue to the end of the world,' but that didn't change the fact that Reepicheep's desire to go on to Aslan's country was still PERFECT. AND LUCY GETS TO HUG HIM KAJEPOAJPDOAJ AND EUSTACEEEEE EUSTACE CRYING AND REEPICHEEP AND IT WAS SO RANDOM BUT THEY HAD A LITTLE CORACLE WAITING FOR HIM AND HE LEAVES HIS SWORD AND THEN AND THEN HE GOES.  He was perfect, Simon Pegg was perfect voicing him, and I loved it all.

Caspian.  Let's be honest here, Ben Barnes looked so perfectly perfect and delicious that I couldn't care less about any issues with his characterization.  And with that out of the way - I did really like Caspian here.  It's a completely different beast than the book, in that they completely flipped which characters get the development, re: Edmund and Lucy vs Caspian, but it worked as it's own different thing.  So, I mean, I don't really have any deep thoughts about Caspian, but he was great throughout and Ben played him wonderfully as ever, and praise the lord that he dropped the accent.

Edmund.  I....did not have issues with the Deathwater scene?  I know I'm a complete black sheep here, but I just didn't.  From everyone's spoilers about it I was actually expecting a screeching infantile hissy fit, so first of all that didn't happen, obviously.  Then, I mean.  They changed the motivations, yes, and yes, I'm upset that they felt they had to thrust Peter's issues onto Edmund, but accepting that they did do so, accepting that this Edmund is very upset that his skills and talents and contributions are being ignored, that scene was fine.  And Edmund is a bad-ass, and they did a good job of showing that.  The White Witch stuff...didn't make sense, and yet it did?  They shouldn't have had her offer to make him her king, because he is SO beyond that, but the temptation of being seen as a man, the desire to be respected for his valid skills, that's totally acceptable.  Now, they could have done that without Jadis, but that goes back to my issues with how the Mist drove EVERYTHING in this movie, so that's not Edmund's fault, and I thought Skandar did a good job of playing what he was given.  And I liked his acceptance of going back in the end. Very Edmund, very perfect.

Lucy. oh Lucy Lucy Lucy. I loved her.  I thought the flirting, the playing with hair, the desire to be pretty LIKE SUSAN, was all fine.  I would have preferred more than that, like if they'd included her listening in on her friend, but in this case I felt that was an issue that didn't necessarily negate the fact that she's grown up before.  It's like...in Narnia Lucy grew up as the Valiant Queen, right?  She was always respected and loved and such.  Now she's having to grow up again, and it's not in Narnia, it's in England where she isn't so valued, and I think it makes sense that she'd see, well Susan's still admired and beloved here, she's being invited places by officers, everyone loves Susan....and I'm stuck making soup for Uncle Harold.  So I can resolve all that just fine for myself.  And she got to be bad ass Pirate Queen Lucy, and I thought Georgie's acting at the end was SUPERB.
Connected to Lucy I'll do both Gael and Liliandil.  Gael - pointless, but I liked her nonetheless.  She was a clumsy way of helping resolve Lucy's issues and to create a nice concluding family-friendly moment, but still, when she says "when I grow up I want to be just like you," I was a)melting at the adorable and b) nodding in fervent agreement.  And of course I'm pleased that she's there bunking with Lucy, because that means the moviemakers clearly understand that Lucy needs a bedfellow so that she can claim innocence, which thus means that they clearly know that something's going on between Lucy and Caspian.  So Gael: cute, pointless, but fine.
Liliandil!  I liked her.  I wish she hadn't been glowing, and I wish she were the star's daughter rather than the star, and I do wish we could have seen Ramandu, but I thought the actress did really well, actually, with the detached nobility and the tiny smiles.  Per rth's fanon that she's the driving force behind the good side, I think she's Coriakin, too! Changing form, and all, lol.  I dunno.  But she didn't bother me at all, which means that mostly she was just there, as in the book, which means that the more I see it and the more I think about her, the more I'll like her.  In my head she and Gael go on to hero worship Lucy a lot together.  I did think it was weird that they didn't have any mention of Caspian coming back to her in the end, or marrying her, or anything.   She was just there and then not.

Ummm, I'm sure I have more to say, but I think that's it for now.

In conclusion: by the end of this movie, I was crying for Lucy and her loss of Aslan and Narnia and Reepicheep, and when they all sat around at the end just looking at each other, I was sniffling with love and sadness, so to me, the movie was a success :DDD

LILI IS JUST THERE BUT SHE SAYS GOODBYE TO CASPIAN. Word, in my head though Gael (is it Gael instead of Gail/Gale?) stays on as her lady's maid and gets Susan's bow because SOMEONE NEEDS TO USE IT OKAY and because Lili's personal bff/bodyguard and they both are IN LOVE WITH LUCY.

ALSO THE SEA GIRL. METO I NOW HAVE SO MANY FEMSLASH OPTIONS.

Fankwank: Cornelius gave the seven lords the swords, he found them while looking for the horn. (also, they are not...magically golden age? wtf? IN MY HEAD, okay, after the four Pevensies disappear seven of their advisors/courtiers/nobles take over, and these are just their swords. I don't know who owns any of them except THE ONE EDMUND GETS BACK THAT WAS COVERED IN WHATEVER THE HELL THAT WAS WAS TOTALLY PERIDAN'S. And Ed and Lu look at it, and Peridan's name is engraved on the hilt, and they both remember, and since it is Peridan it is probably some ridiculous memory like of him JOURNEYING TO FIND THE COOLEST SWORD EVER, EDMUND, EVER, and he got it specially engraved with wings to match his helmet (THAT IS CANON BTW) and they are sad, but they smile.)

Do you think Lili can go between the worlds? IE CAN SHE FIND LUCY IN ENGLAND FOR SEXYTIMES.

Also I am amazed that you did not mention the Ed/Cas subtext even once!

BASICALLY AGREE WITH ALL THIS, A+++++

YES YES YES TRYING TO WARN HER. ~BRAVING THE DARK ISLAND FOR LUUUCY~

Yesssssss! And Gael smiles and she has her (Lucy's) (Susan's) bow in her hands and Lili holds the cordial (because honestly I don't know how I feel about putting them on a shelf and leaving them there) and they smile at each other. CASPIAN WHAT CASPIAN.

Peridan is the dorkiest you know it. Also he was really sad when he had THE COOLEST HELMET WITH WINGS ON IT and he showed it to Edmund in Calormen and Edmund LAUGHED. (Susan said it was "very striking".)

YESSSSS. SHE WATCHES AND AND AND SOMETIMES SHE COMES TO VISIT.

Mostly I was just snickering every time they had a ~moment.

Caspian is just Peridan v2. He sleeps with alllll the Pevensies (except maybe Peter). But I was kind of lololol about there being so much slashiness in a ~family ~Christian movie. I didn't get as much OT3 as I would like though, FAVE PART OF THE BOOK IS THE THREE MONARCHS.

GOOD POINT. And she doesn't watch Lucy sleep through the porthole so I think it's all okay.

OMFG YES PLEASE. "This one time," Caspian says, "Edmund let me BUCKLE HIS ARMOR *_*!"

Seeeriously. The book is so much--slower and deeper and more lyrical and contemplative? Idk how to describe it. DIM PURPLISH SMELL. CAN'T STAND MUCH MORE BUT DON'T WANT IT TO STOP. MUSIC THAT WOULD BREAK YOUR HEART BUT NOT SAD. Slow inevitable journey to the end, I waaaant you.
